the sheer unpleasantness of the very impersonal automobile

It beggars belief! How any sane person who is not brain damaged actually claim to "enjoy" driving?!!
Driving is a pain in the ass.
First of all, you climb into a small, confined space. The project of getting anything you need by way of maps or notes while driving is difficult.
Roads are not clearly marked. You travel quickly, crowded by huge trucks, and signs are not always wholly transparent in meaning:
"turn around" means, e.g., that you go under the freeway and back in the other direction
from one quickly moving one-way street to another---That is nothing which is obvious to a sane human being simply in virtue of knowing the English language.
And these one-way streets are bullshit. Ostensibly, they make travel quicker, but the price
you pay is danger from the other cars, and the constant danger that if you miss your turn, you will end up in Timbuktoo.

No, please get me out of here.
The automobile is bullshit.

And that's even before we begin to talk about climate change and who exactly profits from the failure to provide public transport....
